RRBR Red Rock Balloon Rally. Held annually the first weekend of December in Gallup, New Mexico, 200 balloons from across the Southwest and around the world fly the ancient canyon walls or Red Rock State Park. Frequently described as a balloonist's paradiose, a highly prized invitation to this event offers pilots the opportunity to compete for fine Native American Arts and crafts.

Gallup (Navajo: Na?nízhoozhí) is a city in McKinley County, New Mexico, United States. The population was 20,209 at the 2000 census. It is the county seat of McKinley CountyGR6.

Gallup was founded in 1891 as a railhead for the Atlantic and Pacific Railroad.

Gallup was the setting as the center of activity in a 2006 Sci Fi Channel mini-series The Lost Room starring Peter Krause.

Gallup is sometimes called the "Indian Capital of the World", for its location in the heart of Native American lands, and the presence of Navajo, Zuni, Hopi and other tribes.

Route 66 runs through Gallup, and the town's name is mentioned in the lyrics to the song, Route 66.

Gallup is located at (35.523750, -108.734088)GR1.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 34.6 km2 (13.4 mi2), all land.
Climate
Gallup experiences four seasons with large daily temperature ranges. Winter mornings can be very cold, with temperatures in the 0s to low 10s F. However, by mid-afternoon, it is not uncommon for the temperature to be close to 50 F. Summer afternoons have temperatures near 90 F, and can fall into the 40s and 50s by dawn.
Demographics
As of the censusGR2 of 2000, there were 20,209 people, 6,810 households, and 4,869 families residing in the city. The population density was 584.5/km2 (1,513.7/mi2). There were 7,349 housing units at an average density of 212.5/km2 (550.5/mi2). The racial makeup of the city was 40.11% White, 1.08% African American, 36.64% Native American, 1.43% Asian, 0.09% Pacific Islander, 14.77% from other races, and 5.87% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 33.15% of the population.

There were 6,810 households out of which 41.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 45.3% were married couples living together, 19.8% had a female householder with no husband present, and 28.5% were non-families. 23.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 6.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.85 and the average family size was 3.39.

In the city the population was spread out with 32.7% under the age of 18, 9.3% from 18 to 24, 28.8% from 25 to 44, 20.3% from 45 to 64, and 8.9% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 31 years. For every 100 females there were 91.0 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 86.2 males.

The median income for a household in the city was $34,868, and the median income for a family was $39,197. Males had a median income of $33,380 versus $24,441 for females. The per capita income for the city was $15,789. About 16.6% of families and 20.8% of the population were below the poverty line, including 26.8% of those under age 18 and 16.8% of those age 65 or over.

There were 26,718 housing units at an average density of 2/km2 (5/mi2). The racial makeup of the county was 16.39% White, 0.40% Black or African American, 74.72% Native American, 0.46% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 5.47% from other races, and 2.52% from two or more races. 12.40% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 21,476 households out of which 46.00% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.70% were married couples living together, 22.70% had a female householder with no husband present, and 22.30% were non-families. 19.50% of all households were made up of individuals and 5.30% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.44 and the average family size was 3.99.

In the county the population was spread out with 38.00% under the age of 18, 9.70% from 18 to 24, 27.80% from 25 to 44, 17.60% from 45 to 64, and 6.90% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 27 years. For every 100 females there were 93.50 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.30 males.

The median income for a household in the county was $25,005, and the median income for a family was $26,806. Males had a median income of $26,963 versus $21,014 for females. The per capita income for the county was $9,872. About 31.90% of families and 36.10% of the population were below the poverty line, including 42.30% of those under age 18 and 31.50% of those age 65 or over. The county's per-capita income makes it one of the poorest counties in the United States.

McKinley County is one of only 38 county-level census divisions of the United States where the most spoken language is not English and one of only 3 where it is neither English nor Spanish. 45.75% of the population speak Navajo at home, followed by English at 38.87%, Zu?i at 9.03%, and Spanish at 5.72%.
